Each photograph should have a primary subject. In this example, the statue of Tom Sawyer and
Huck Finn is the subject. In photo "A", the subject is small and in the center of the picture. In photo "B", Tom and Huck are larger in relation to the outer limits of the picture. In addition, the camera is
turned vertically. This increases the amount of space occupied by the subject. Your assignment: Photograph the same subject two ways. In the first picture surround the subject with a lot of space. You might place it in the center of the viewfinder. In the second photo, walk closer to the subject in order to fill up the frame. Consider the viewfinder to be a window which allows you to concentrate on the subject. If the subject is vertical, match the position of the camera to it. You will find that you have presented your photo subject more forcefully. In this way, you are communicating your vision effectively. Do you plan to use your zoom lens to fill up the frame? If so, you must hold the camera very steady when using the telephoto focal length. © Walt Croxton |
