In lesson 1, you were advised to fill up the viewfinder frame with your subject. This involved using your telephoto lens or simply walking toward your subject. Like all "rules," there are common sense limitations! In taking a picture of a person, try to leave a little space between the image of the subject and the edge of the frame In photo "A" the pretty girl's head is just touching the top of the picture. This is called a point merger. In addition, her hand has been cropped across her fingers. It would have been better to have left more of her hand. CLOSE, BUT NOT TOO CLOSE. Your assignment: Take a photograph of a person where you fill up the vertical frame with your subject. Compose it as carefully as you are able. On your second photo, move or zoom too close. Compare the results. CLOSE, BUT NOT TOO CLOSE. © Walt Croxton |
